Blanks
Put a word in curly brackets and Space Factory asks for it, then fills it in.
Writing one
Anywhere in the template space, write the thing that changes in curly brackets:
{client}, {project}, {start date}. That’s the whole syntax.
A blank’s name starts with a letter and can hold letters, numbers, spaces, _ and
-, up to 40 characters. Capitals don’t matter: {Client} and
{client} are the same blank.
Where they work
- page titles
- page text, including tables and lists
- links, both to other pages and to outside addresses
- labels
- macro parameters — a Jira macro’s query, an info panel’s title
- the new space’s name, key, description and space labels
A blank can be a whole link: make a link whose address is just {website},
and the address someone types goes in as it is — as long as it is a web address (starting
http:// or https://) or an email address (mailto:). Anything else
is not turned into a working link. A blank that is only part of an address, like
https://example.com/clients/{client}, is written in safely, with spaces and symbols
encoded.
Text inside a code block is left exactly as written, so a code sample that happens to contain curly brackets survives. Turn on Fill in blanks inside code blocks too on the template if you want them filled.
Types
| Type | What the person gets |
|---|---|
| Text | A box. You can give a suggested value. |
| Date | A date picker. You choose how it’s written on the pages. |
| Person | A person picker. Can @mention them on every page that uses the blank, and can be given a role on the new space. |
| Number | A number box. |
| A choice from a list | A dropdown of the choices you set. |
The four you don’t have to set up
These are filled in for you and never asked for:
{today}— the date the space is created, written as YYYY-MM-DD (the date in UTC). The date format you pick for date blanks doesn’t apply to it.{requester}— the name of the person who asked for it{space key}and{space name}— the new space’s own key and name. When the pages go into a space that already exists, they are that space’s key and the title of the new page everything is created under.
Typos
When Space Factory reads a template it compares the blanks it found with each other. A name that is
within two letters of a more common one is flagged: “We found {clinet} once. Did you mean
{client}?” Names shorter than 4 characters aren’t checked. It never guesses — an unknown
blank is left on the page exactly as written, and the preview says so.
The preview before a creation lists every blank like that: each likely typo, with what it probably meant, and each blank in the pages that isn’t one of the template’s blanks. The list comes from Space Factory’s last read of the template, and the preview says when that was, so if the pages have changed since, read the template again.
Mentions and notifications
A person blank can put a real @mention on every page that uses it. Mentions are filled in before anyone is set to watch the new space, so nobody gets a notification for each page as it’s built.
